If the myth of Doctor Faustus has historically been linked to the Protestant north, Don Juan represents the archetypical myth of the Catholic south. Interpreted by countless dramatists, including Tirso de Molina, Goldoni and Molière, music has also seen an endless stream of composers who have included this character in over 80 operas, but there can be no doubt that Mozart’sDon Giovanni tops them all. This opera of operas needs to be thought through and performed always from new perspectives shedding more light on this archetype, and without a doubt Dmitri Tcherniakov’s proposal, accompanied by Alejo Pérez heading up the orchestra, overflows with imagination and originality in order to interpret the myth for an age in which we are flooded by sexism.
