Essence, by Joaquín Cortés

14 Mar, 23

Sometimes, looking at a man's boots is enough to know his story. The story of Joaquín Cortés is written to the rhythm of a farruca, and goes from a patio in Córdoba to the streets of Manhattan. In between, the whole world.

The journey is in his veins, and that's why his heel tapping gives off the aroma of a candle under the stars. But his is something more: the precision of a metronome, with the unbridled passion of a whole village, spilling out in stabs on the stage.

The guitars roar, the clapping can be heard coming from far away and the man dancing in the middle makes the earth tremble with his loneliness. What a strange alchemy is Art, which makes us see love, rage, desire and hope in a heel tap.

Cortés dances. But language always falls short. Perhaps it would be fairer to say that Cortés breaks his waist like a bullfighter, when the bull of life brushes his side and there is no other cape than the one created by his hands, drawing fantasies in the air of a theatre.

Universal gypsy, light-footed new yorker, Muscovite swan, Italian seducer, Spanish gentleman... there is as much Cortés as there are miles on his boots. But always the Artist, waiting to step out of the wings and ride his magic with the fury of an electric rider.

His dance is a storm where, curiously, we find refuge. May those boots never stop beating; may they continue to mark the pulse of all of us who sit down to watch him every night, in any city.
