As a child, Manuel de Falla used to play with puppets and act out the adventures of Don Quixote. When the Princesse de Polignac commissioned him to write a work for a chamber orchestra, it was unsurprising that the composer took inspiration from Cervantes' novel. The fragment chosen was the passage describing the puppeteer Master Peter, who toured La Mancha with a show that told a story of love and persecution between Moors and Christians. And, of course, the noble protagonist of the novel confuses reality with fantasy once again, and ends up fighting with the poor puppets. For the première of the show (1923) Falla had the help of his friend, the painter, engraver and puppeteer Hermenegildo Lanz. The director of the current staging is his grandson, Enrique Lanz, creator of the prestigious puppet company Etcetera. As an homage to his past and in tribute to the geniuses Cervantes and Falla, he has created a magical show with giant puppets.
