The popular opera; Porgy and Bess, by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin, which was heard during the first season of the Teatro Real in Madrid, is coming back after 17 years. This mestizo and racial opera, which joins jazz and blues rhythms and popular Afro-American and gospel melodies, arrives at Teatro Real with help from Cape Town Opera Company. This production has a background of success from the tour round the UK. The hit aria Summertime, from Porgy and Bess, sung by the main character, has become one of the most performed and covered songs by Gershwin worldwide. The opera tells the story of Porgy, an invalid and marginal Afro-American, who fights to rescue his lover Bess from the terrible hands of delinquents who take advantage of her weakness and beauty.
