Mats Ek defied conventions again with Juliet & Romeo, his personal reinterpretation of the Shake-speare myth for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Created in 2013 on the occasion of the company’s 240th an-niversary, this choreography sets aside Prokofiev’s score and instead uses a selection of Tschaikovsky pieces. The ballet’s inverted title not only claims the key role of Juliet, but also anticipates a subversion of the traditional story: Ek’s irreverent style, with awkward, insolent moves and the absence of iconic features like the balcony, swords or the bottle of poi-son, make the tender adolescent lovers the true core of the drama.
Music by Piotr Ilich Chaikovski (1840-1893), selected by Mats Ek, arranged by Anders Högstedt
