OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Teatro Real at the forefront of sustainability

  • Energy certification category A achieved in three years thanks to European funds from the Energy Renovation Project.
  • Challenge of balancing conservation.

Reliance on renewable energy

  • The first historic building in the world to integrate solar panel energy production.
  • A renovated roof with an area of 1,500 m² that can be walked on.
  • Heating generated with seasonal high-performance heat pumps.

Example of innovation and technology

  • Award for the best energy efficiency and sustainability action in the optimisation of installations in 2024 for A3E.
  • Environmental and energy management system certified since 2021.
  • International standards ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 for the efficient use of natural and material resources and waste achieved.

Smart energy management

  • Multi-target optimisation, data mining techniques, machine learning and AI-based use model.
  • Progress in calculating the SRI (Smart Readiness Indicator) in line with criteria set by the European Union.
  • New smart lighting system for the facades that improves and connects an area of more than 3,500 m2 (2025), controlled from the cloud.

Commitment and responsibility with water

  • Implementation of an ambitious integrated water management plan.
  • A water consumption saving of more than 45% in the last five years.

Material resources and waste

  • In line with ISO 14001, the main indicators established seek the evolution of the materials used and their chemical composition.
  • All waste types must be transformed into resources in order to make progress with the Teatro Real’s separation and recycling plan (2020).

Carbon neutral since 2019

  • Decarbonisation through innovation and awareness-raising.
  • Net Zero: targets and strategies set in line with the applicable regulations.

More digitisation. Less paper

  • Programme printing significantly reduced, offering audiences information on digital media or using QR codes.
  • Printing and internal paper consumption reduced by more than 80%.

Circular economy

  • Digital cataloguing of the components of artistic productions, facilitating logistics and commitment to the circular economy.
  • Circularity of scenery structures and elements strengthened through the preliminary preparation of productions by all technical teams.

Getting the message across

  • Sustainability progress, guidelines and milestones are communicated through forums, Teatro Real’s website and social media, the printed and digital press, an annual activity report, internal channels, Concertante (the monthly publication for workers with a sustainability section), and monitoring and transparency audits.
  • Commitment to setting an example under the European EPDB directive 1275/2024 for public authorities.
