Recognised in 2021 as BEST OPERA COMPANY by the prestigious International Opera Awards, Teatro Real is the first performing arts institution in Spain and one of the main opera houses worldwide.
TEATRO REAL AT THE EXPO 2020 IN DUBAI
Its artistic project places it as one of the world's greatest opera venues, highlighting the co-productions with renowned theatres such as the Royal Opera House or the Opéra national de Paris. Besides, its opera seasons combine both traditional and contemporary lyric repertoire, featuring 20th century music and the latest avant-garde with the best artists and creators of today.
At the same time, it pays special attention to new audiences and technological innovation, becoming a reference in this area with the streaming platform My Opera Player and initiatives such as the virtual reality project present at the Expo 2020 in Dubai.

At the Spain Pavilion of the Expo 2020 in Dubai, Teatro Real presents five immersive experiences to discover some of its most emblematic productions from its stage, costume workshops and rehearsal rooms. Using 3D glasses, you will have the opportunity to walk around the backstage and dive into four opera productions: Aida, Madama Butterfly, Street Scene and La bohème.
Additionally, you will be able to enjoy a screening of a selection of the most famous opera arias in history, performed on the stage of Teatro Real.

Madama Butterfly, one of the most staged operas in the whole world.
The tragic story of the geisha Cio Cio San, better known as Madama Butterfly, touches all audiences. Puccini’s innate talent narrates the terrible conflict between two irreconcilable civilizations. This time the story is told from a different angle. Stage director Mario Gas sets the story in a 1930s cinema set. He narrates the poignant drama from three simultaneous perspectives for an even more marvelous experience of this classic by Giacomo Puccini.

In the midst of the Bicentennial and 20th anniversary celebrations, the Teatro Real revived one of its most monumental and emblematic productions of its recent history: Aida, by Giuseppe Verdi. It premiered in 1998 with the staging, scenography, and costumes by Hugo de Ana. Now we will see a restored and updated version of one of the most popular operas by the composer from Busseto.
Under the baton of Nicola Luisotti, principal guest musical director of the Teatro Real and Prize for the Best Musical Director Opera XXI for Turandot at Teatro Real.

The premiere at the Teatro Real of Street Scene, by Kurt Weill, were one of the important events of the season. With the libretto by Elmer Rice, based on a story by the same name (Pulitzer Prize-winning play 1929), and the song lyrics by Langston Hughe, Street Scene narrates a series of anonymous lives in a big city from a brutally realistic viewpoint.
This was Weill’s first opera composed during his American exile years and he referred to it as an “American opera”; in it, the Broadway musical, North American jazz and European traditional opera converge.

The starting point for La bohème and its entire creative process up until the first performance of the opera in Turin’s Teatro Regio on 1 February 1896 is documented in minute detail in the abundant correspondence between Giacomo Puccini, his publisher and mentor Giulio Ricordi, and the librettists Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. The latter began their stormy, yet fruitful, collaboration with this opera and went on to write the librettos for Tosca and Madama Butterfly.
Starting with the book Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger (1882-1861), originally a series of autobiographical stories published in a magazine, the two librettists, closely supervised by Puccini, built an ensemble plot in which four young bohemian artists confront financial difficulties and bad weather with humour and good cheer, finding their way in an effervescent, bustling, wintry Paris.
