Conceptos fundamentales de la ópera contemporánea: siglos XX y XXI

Through this course, which is an approach to contemporary opera, you will be able to learn about the elements and approach the different compositional languages ​​that make up the works of the 20th and 21st centuries. In these five sessions, Professor Gabriel Menéndez Torrellas will give you the necessary keys to be able to understand and enjoy the most emblematic compositions of the last 120 years.

About the course

Through audiovisual examples, this course aims to explain the fundamental concepts that allow us to penetrate the essence of operas: the elements of musical dramaturgy, vocal and instrumental forms, the musical configuration of the scenic space, the interaction between soloists, ensembles and choirs and staging, among others.

About the teacher

Gabriel Menéndez Torrellas is a Doctor of Aesthetics and Philosophy. He holds the Magister Artium in Musicology and Art History from the Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), at whose Faculty of Musicology he was a professor. Since 2013 he has directed the Opera and Musicology Seminar at CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, where he is a professor of Opera History. Since 2008, he regularly teaches courses on opera at the Teatro Real in Madrid, among which we highlight those dedicated to the fundamental concepts of opera.
