Opera

Dido and Aeneas (In concert version)

Henry Purcell

18 Nov, 13

Musical conductor: Teodor Currentzis

With Dido and Aeneas, Henry Purcell created the defining work in English opera, which stood uncontested for two hundred years until it was rivalled by the work of Benjamin Britten. Spanning the gap between Great Britain and continental Europe, he left more traditional forms of theatre behind, especially the musicals that made up the bulk of the genre on the island. Purcell was open to new ideas from Europe: he included the dances found in French opera, and gave more prominence to Italian arias.  He was also inspired by Elizabethan sources such as Monteverdi and Lully, and he managed to create a balance between different styles that resulted in the inspired music that has made this extract of Virgil's Aenid one of opera's finest works in a concert version in the Teatro Real.
