“Macabre Dance” is the subtitle that accompanies the ballet Tod in Venedig, a free adaptation by choreographer John Neumeier of Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, a narrative that also fascinated creators like Visconti and Britten. In this ballet, premièring at the Staatsoper in Hamburg on 7 December 2003, the character Aschenbach is reincarnated as a prestigious choreographer in crisis. Divided into ten scenes, it uses the music of Bach and Wagner to illustrate Aschenbach’s journey from art to life... and death. In the words of Neumeier himself, “an adult man fascinated by a young man. I can choreograph this legendary part, this emotional part, but not Thomas Mann’s text”. His words and notes also tell us that he also thought the mythical element was very important. In fact, he took a conscious interest in a metaphysical component that overlays the concrete and relatable plot.
