Inspired by the iconic character of Woyzeck, Marie explores the difficulties of a single mother in conflict with her sexual freedom, in which she is eventually annihilated by society and murdered by her lover. If the play by Georg Büchner and his counterpart Wozzeck by Alban Berg are considered the tragedies of contemporary man, then Marie presents the tragedy of the contemporary woman. In this opera where overlapping layers dilute reality we discover our protagonist from statements made by others about her. As though taken from trial proceedings, the librettist’s fictional creation of a character prematurely silenced, is mixed with the commentaries about Marie by the characters from Büchner. Marie is a deconstruction of that paradigm of 20th century music which is Berg’s composition. However it is also returns to opera’s origins, fusing artistic expression with the mission to be a tool of social change, a genre which intrinsically links it to Greek tragedy. This work has been made possible with a Leonardo scholarship for Research and Cultural Creators from the Fundación BBVA in 2018.
