Synopsis and more information
Tannhäuser is a troubadour who has spent time in Venusberg (the Mount of Venus) – a world of sensual pleasures ruled by the goddess. Although life there is nothing but enjoyment, he wants to return to reality.
After escaping, he goes back to the valley of Wartburg, where everyone believes him to have disappeared, especially Elisabeth, who has always loved him in a pure, spiritual way.
Trying to integrate himself once again, Tannhäuser takes part in a singing competition. While the other troubadours exalt higher, noble love, he sings openly about carnal desire. This causes a scandal and only Elisabeth saves him from being punished, begging for mercy for him. Finally, his punishment is that he must make a tough pilgrimage to Rome to obtain the Pope’s forgiveness.
Tannhäuser does his penance, but the Pope rejects him, saying his sin is so great that it will only be forgiven if his dried up staff blooms again. Desperate, he returns to Germany without hope. There, he discovers that Elisabeth, consumed by sadness and praying for his soul, has died. When he sees her, Tannhäuser also falls, lifeless. Shortly afterwards news of the miracle arrives: the Pope’s staff has bloomed, a sign that Tannhäuser has finally been redeemed.
