Since 1980 the Tanztheater Wuppertal has presented Café Müller (created in 1978) and The Rite of Spring (created in 1975), two pieces by Pina Bausch that are worlds apart, as part of the same programme. In contrast to the minimalist gestures and Henry Purcell’s music in Café Müller, the rhythmic violence and collective impulse of Igor Stravinsky’s score unfold on a stage covered in wet peat. The mud covers the bodies and accentuates the primitive dimension of sacrifice. Pina Bausch performed her role in Café Müller until shortly before her death in 2009; since then, it has been passed on to new generations of dancers.
