St Matthew’s Passion, by Bach, premiered on Good Friday 1727, is considered by many to be one of the most important works in the entire history of music. This monumental religious composition tells of the suffering and death of Christ and is presented at the Teatro Real by the Utopia Orchestra & Choir under the baton of Teodor Currentzis and artists such as Christophe Dumaux, among others.

Music by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).

Libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici, after texts from 26th and 27th Chapters of the Gospel of Matthew in the Luther Bible (1534), and Lutheran choral texts.

Premiered at St. Thomas Church (Leipzig) on 11 april 1727.

The libretto is based partly on chapters 26 and 27 of Martin Luther’s translation of St Matthew’s Gospel and partly on poetry by the writer Christian Friedrich Henrici, also known as Picander, and on Lutheran choral music related to the Passion.
